The Unikko pattern was created in 1964 after Marimekko's founder, Armi Ratia, publicly declared that no floral fabrics would be designed by the company. In defiance, Maija Isola designed a bold collection of floral patterns, including Unikko, which means "poppy" in Finnish. Today, Unikko is one of Marimekko's most recognizable and beloved patterns worldwide.
